Our Plans for

St Osyth Priory

A Vision for a Modern Estate

Looking to the Future

A labour of love

Securing the future of St Osyth Priory has become a labour of love for the Sargeant Family. A detailed process of sourcing grant funding, liaising with the heritage and conservation organisations, achieving planning consents to raise funds for the restoration via Enabling Development and carrying out extensive and ongoing maintenance to manage the heritage assets is just the start of this journey.

But the vision goes beyond securing the future of what is one of the most important and largest collections of ecclesiastical buildings in the country. St Osyth Priory Estate will become the home of a vibrant new community. Alongside the building of private new homes, there will be the improvement of woodland and pasture for rare native breeds and wildlife. Over time, the estate will become home to a country pub, a new restaurant and exquisite holiday accommodation, all as part of a new blueprint for the Estate agreed with Tendring District Council.

At the heart of the estate, will be an exclusive wedding venue, utilising Darcy House, the Tithe Barn, and The Chapel. Here there are also plans for a new visitor and education centre, as well as a café and play barn adjacent to the Tithe Barn, and a farm and gift shop in the Dairy and Cart Shed buildings, selling produce from the estate and other nearby specialist producers.

The walled garden will eventually be home to beauty treatment rooms and a small spa for those who wish to unwind and be pampered in these beautiful surroundings. Meanwhile, within the parkland there will be a number of follies recreating aspects of the historic site as it would have been centuries ago, providing unique and breath-taking properties available to rent either for wedding guests or as holiday accommodation.

All of these facilities are planned to be open to the general public, similar to many of England’s great country estates, while the large scale of the estate still allows a wedding party to create an occasion as exclusive and as private as they might require.

This activity helps to fund our restoration work to preserve, restore and protect the estate’s 16 separate Grade I, II* and II listed buildings, set within a Grade II registered historic park and garden. St Osyth Priory has begun a regeneration that has secured its future as an iconic destination, just as it originally would have been for pilgrims to the first Augustinian Abbey almost 1,000 years ago.
