What do couples want in a wedding venue?

Every couple wants their wedding day to be a unique celebration of their love, and for most couples the beginning of the planning for their big day will be finding the perfect wedding venue.

We are all individuals, each with our own tastes and ideas, so no two weddings will ever be the same. However, there are some common themes when it comes to what feels most important to brides and grooms to be as they make the day of their dreams a reality.

Here are some key features that couples want in a wedding venue:

A space that’s just yours

There are few occasions in your life that you will want to be more uniquely special than your wedding day. One of the primary concerns for many brides and grooms is that the space where they share those magic moments is exclusive to them and they can feel comfortable that their celebrations are the main focus of the day. Not many brides want to take a wrong turn in their wedding dress and suddenly be confronted with a group of spa guests in dressing gowns or a foursome of golfers set to head out to the first tee. To avoid unwanted distractions, pick a wedding venue that is exactly that… just a wedding venue.

Being well looked after

However meticulous and prepared you are in your planning, tradition dictates that emotions tend to run high on your wedding day, so the last thing you need is any added stress caused by unprofessional or inexperienced staff. The right wedding venue for you should make you feel relaxed and at ease, and the most important ingredient for delivering the right experience is the people who are looking after you. If you don’t get the right vibe from the people you meet the first time you take a tour of a venue, the chances are your wedding guests will suffer the same fate if you choose to hold your wedding there.

A taste sensation

At the heart of your wedding day celebrations is your wedding breakfast – your first meal as a married couple and a chance to share that moment with your nearest and dearest. Masterminding a menu that you and your guests will love is often a favourite part of the wedding day planning, so find yourself a venue that has the culinary skills to create the wow factor when it comes to wedding dining. The quality of the food and drink on offer is often a reflection of just how good a host you are, and you might just be surprised how much the perfect platter of canapes or a delicious dessert is the memory that guests go away with.

Find a ‘can do’ attitude

Your wedding day is a unique celebration of the love between you and your partner, so you are certain to want your wedding day to have that individual feel. This can be more difficult to achieve if you find yourself dealing with a wedding venue that is overly prescriptive and very restricted in the flexibility of its arrangements. If you are limited by where and when your wedding guests can use different parts of the venue and what you can do as part of your day, it can quickly take the shine off this most special of occasions. It’s worth hunting around for a host that has a can do attitude and do their best to make your dreams come true.

Add a touch of magic

At the end of the day, you want your wedding celebrations to create magical memories that will last you a lifetime. For this reason, don’t settle for second best and go in search of a wedding venue that has that little something extra. Whether that is a sense of grandeur, and special touch of luxury or a legendary essence of history, when it comes to your wedding day, why not pick a venue that has the wow factor? The right venue for you should give you little lift every time you visit – that way you can be sure you and your guests will be in a mood of awe and wonder as your day unfolds.

St Osyth Priory welcomed VIPs, heritage enthusiasts and members of the community to celebrate the official opening of its magnificently restored Gatehouse – a treasured symbol of the estate’s rich history and future as a luxury wedding venue. The event was marked by a special guest appearance from renowned TV architect George Clarke, known for his Channel 4 shows The Restoration Man and Amazing Spaces. George cut the ribbon and praised the extraordinary work carried out to restore the Gatehouse, which dates back to 1481 and is widely regarded as one of Britain’s finest examples of flint flushwork. The day’s celebrations included guided tours of the priory estate, allowing guests to appreciate the craftsmanship and architectural heritage that defines St Osyth Priory. Visitors were also given a glimpse inside the recently restored Darcy House – now a beautifully reimagined events space, combining historical grandeur with modern comfort. A highlight of the event was a lively panel discussion and Q&A session featuring George Clarke, restoration experts and representatives from St Osyth Priory. Together, they discussed the challenges and triumphs of restoring such an important heritage site, as well as the vision for its sustainable future. The Gatehouse restoration is part of a long-standing project led by the Sargeant family, who have owned the estate since 1999. “It has been a labour of love,” said William Grinsted, Managing Director. “To now make the Gatehouse the centrepiece of a luxury wedding venue will mean this incredible building will host many more memories that will last a lifetime.” Simon Vernon-Harcourt, Design & Planning Director at City & Country Group, echoed this sentiment, reflecting on the estate’s ongoing role in creating a unique community in a setting steeped in history. St Osyth Priory now stands not only as a monument to the past but also as a beacon for future celebrations, bringing heritage and hospitality together in one extraordinary place.
