Ten steps to taking a digital detox

Steps to taking a digital detox

In a world where we’re constantly connected, the idea of taking a digital detox, however briefly, can feel a bit disconcerting. But the benefits of taking a step back from an incessant online connection are well documented, including improved focus, deeper sleep, reduced stress and more meaningful in-person connections. Whether you want a total tech break or just need to reclaim your time, here are ten steps to help you take a successful digital detox.

Set clear goals
Start by identifying why you want a detox. Is it to reduce screen time or is it your priority to reconnect with loved ones? Do you need more sleep? Knowing why you need a digital detox will help you to formulate a plan of action and keep you motivated when old habits try to pull you back in.

Choose your detox type
Not every detox needs to be ‘cold turkey’. You might choose to pause social media, check email once a day or avoid screens after 8pm. Decide what form of digital detox you want and work out how to achieve that.

Pick a start date and duration
Commit to a realistic time frame. A weekend might be a good start, or even just 24 hours. Longer detoxes, like a week, are great if you can manage them but even short breaks can make a big difference.

Let others know
If friends, family or co-workers usually expect a quick response, let them know you’ll be offline and why. This helps set boundaries and avoids unnecessary worry or misunderstandings.

Remove temptation
Out of sight, out of mind. Log out of apps, turn off notifications or delete particularly addictive platforms from your devices. For a deeper detox, consider leaving your phone in another room. You can also designate certain areas, such as the bedroom or dining room, as no-screen zones.

Plan screen-free activities
Take this opportunity to do something else you enjoy whether that is reading, cooking or getting out and about in the great outdoors. You will feel better for it and with a satisfying hobby, you are less likely to fall back into bad habits.

Take a break
Give yourself a complete reset with a break away – and there is no better sanctuary away from the frenetic demands of day-to-day life than St Osyth Priory. The historic listed buildings are set in 350 acres of natural parkland and make the perfect retreat for someone looking to take a digital detox and reclaim their lives.

Use a buddy system
Invite a friend or partner to detox with you. It adds accountability and gives you someone to share the experience with offline.

Embrace the discomfort
At first, you may feel bored, anxious or even a little lost but that is to be expected. Sit with those feelings; the discomfort is a sign your brain is recalibrating and it will pass.

Reflect and reintegrate

After your detox, take time to reflect. What did you learn? What habits do you want to change moving forward? Use those insights to create healthier digital habits in your everyday life.

A digital detox doesn’t have to be extreme and it can be highly effective. By physically moving your location with a break away, you can also gain a valuable perspective on how your day-to-day life needs to be rebalanced. And there is nothing like being out in nature to heal your soul.

St Osyth Priory welcomed VIPs, heritage enthusiasts and members of the community to celebrate the official opening of its magnificently restored Gatehouse – a treasured symbol of the estate’s rich history and future as a luxury wedding venue. The event was marked by a special guest appearance from renowned TV architect George Clarke, known for his Channel 4 shows The Restoration Man and Amazing Spaces. George cut the ribbon and praised the extraordinary work carried out to restore the Gatehouse, which dates back to 1481 and is widely regarded as one of Britain’s finest examples of flint flushwork. The day’s celebrations included guided tours of the priory estate, allowing guests to appreciate the craftsmanship and architectural heritage that defines St Osyth Priory. Visitors were also given a glimpse inside the recently restored Darcy House – now a beautifully reimagined events space, combining historical grandeur with modern comfort. A highlight of the event was a lively panel discussion and Q&A session featuring George Clarke, restoration experts and representatives from St Osyth Priory. Together, they discussed the challenges and triumphs of restoring such an important heritage site, as well as the vision for its sustainable future. The Gatehouse restoration is part of a long-standing project led by the Sargeant family, who have owned the estate since 1999. “It has been a labour of love,” said William Grinsted, Managing Director. “To now make the Gatehouse the centrepiece of a luxury wedding venue will mean this incredible building will host many more memories that will last a lifetime.” Simon Vernon-Harcourt, Design & Planning Director at City & Country Group, echoed this sentiment, reflecting on the estate’s ongoing role in creating a unique community in a setting steeped in history. St Osyth Priory now stands not only as a monument to the past but also as a beacon for future celebrations, bringing heritage and hospitality together in one extraordinary place.
