Save the date. St Osyth Summer Sounds: Music & Food Festival will return to St Osyth Priory this summer on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 July, with Arts Trust Productions announcing that it is now completely free to attend and confirmed for the next three years, with thanks to the National Lottery Community Fund.

After a successful first year in 2025, the event showed just how much appetite there is for world-class cultural experiences that feel open, welcoming and rooted in community. With its long-term future now secured, and the decision taken to remove ticket costs altogether, the focus shifts to building something people can rely on and look forward to year after year.

Set within the stunning surroundings of St Osyth Priory, the two-day family-friendly festival will once again bring together live performance, food, street performances, family activity and large-scale installations, welcoming up to 10,000 people across the weekend. Our fantastic team at St Osyth Priory are celebrating after winning both the Wedding Venue of the Year 2026 at the Essex Wedding Awards and Best Wedding Venue at the International Hotel Awards… and we could not be prouder.

The prestigious Essex Wedding Awards recognise all aspects of the county’s impressive wedding industry from categories for the make-up artist of the year to wedding dress retailer, florist, DJ, events, entertainment and many more. In addition to our success for the best venue award, the priory was also a finalist in the category for the Historic Wedding Venue of the Year.

The standard of finalists across all the categories was extraordinarily high with other highly acclaimed venues including Downham Hall, Cromwell Manor, East Mersea Hall and Wivenhoe House. So, it was absolutely brilliant when St Osyth Priory was announced as the winner for the Wedding Venue of the Year award, as the team enjoyed the event’s black-tie gala dinner at Chelmsford City Racecourse.

But further reason to celebrate was announced within a matter of days, as our International Hotel Awards win was secured in the Best Wedding Venue in the UK category. St Osyth Priory hosts Strictly!

Historic St Osyth Priory took centre stage for the new series of the BBC’s flagship show Strictly Come Dancing.

The multi-award winning TV show launched its new series on Saturday with 15 celebrity contestants meeting their professional dance partners for the first time.

More than five million viewers tuned in to watch the show with more catching up on BBC iPlayer. Viewers saw five of the contestants waiting nervously at St Osyth Priory to find out who their dance partners would be.

Model and actress Ellie Goldstein, who became the first model with Down syndrome to feature on the cover of Vogue and appear in a campaign for fashion giant Gucci, waited in the formal gardens of the priory, smiling broadly as she discovered she would be partnering former Strictly winner Vito Coppola.

EastEnders actor – and Strictly superfan – Balvinder Sopal, who plays Suki in the BBC soap, was paired with dancer Julian Caillon who is looking forward to his first year on the show.

Shakespearean and TV actor Alex Kingston joyously greeted flamboyant dancer Johannes Radebe outside the priory while TV personality and broadcaster Vicky Pattison was filmed in the stunning panelled Darcy House to meet popular dancer partner Kai Widdrington.

England footballer Lioness Karen Carney smiled with delight when she saw dancer and choreographer Carlos Gu.

Aerial shots also showed the priory’s scoping grounds and stunning gardens as well as the exterior of the magnificent estate.

William Grinsted, managing director of St Osyth Priory Estate, said it was wonderful to welcome the Strictly celebrities and dancers and he said he hoped the venue would be used again in the future.

He said: “Everyone was so nice and it was great to have them here. They seemed to be having a good time and they were laughing and chatting with each other.

“We have had historians filming here before and, of course, TV presenter George Clarke, who officially opened the restore Gatehouse. But having Strictly to film here was the pinnacle. The estate looked amazing and we are hoping it will lead to more opportunities.”

Whether you want a total tech break or just need to reclaim your time, here are ten steps to help you take a successful digital detox.

Set clear goals

The key to a romantic weekend getaway

The world is a busy place, and the pace of life goes at break-neck speed. The ever-increasing demands of our daily lives take their toll both physically and mentally, leaving most of us exhausted. And then there is the impact of the global chaos which can’t be ignored, however hard we try.

But life is too short and too precious to be wasted and it has never been more important than now to take time out, to stop the world and make time to reconnect with your loved one and make some precious memories.

These slow-cooked classics are perfect for a relaxed weekend gathering or an impressive dinner, full of depth, richness, and seasonal flair.

Lamb Shanks with Sun-Dried Tomato Gravy

Tender, fall-off-the-bone lamb shanks slow-braised in a rich sun-dried tomato and wine gravy. Served with creamy mashed potatoes and finished with a fresh lemon-parsley gremolata, this dish is the perfect balance of comfort and sophistication.

Ingredients:

2 tbsp olive oil
4 x 400g St Osyth Priory lamb shanks
Salt & black pepper
2 onions, finely chopped
2 carrots, finely chopped
2 celery sticks, finely chopped
95g sun-dried tomato paste
2 bay leaves
2 sprigs rosemary
250ml dry white wine
750ml lamb or chicken stock
400g tin chopped tomatoes
Zest of 1 lemon
1 clove garlic, finely chopped
Small bunch parsley, chopped
Mashed potato, to serve

Method Summary:
Brown seasoned lamb shanks in olive oil, then remove. Sauté the vegetables until soft, stir in the tomato paste, and add herbs and wine. Simmer and reduce, then return lamb to the pan with stock and tomatoes. Cover and braise in the oven at 150ºC for 2½ hours. Reduce the sauce and finish with a bright gremolata of lemon zest, garlic, and parsley. Serve with mashed potatoes.

Miso-braised Beef Short Ribs

This Asian-inspired dish is a bold twist on a comfort food favourite. St Osyth Priory beef short ribs are slowly cooked in a rich miso-soy broth with ginger and garlic, resulting in melt-in-your-mouth meat with a deeply savoury glaze.

Ingredients:

4 bone-in St Osyth Priory short ribs
Maldon salt & black pepper
2 tbsp plain flour
2 tbsp vegetable oil
3 shallots, diced
2-inch piece of ginger, sliced
¼ cup white miso paste
⅓ cup soy sauce
⅓ cup dark brown sugar
4 cups beef stock
1 head garlic (top trimmed)
Toasted sesame seeds & sliced green onions to garnish

Method Summary:
Season and flour the short ribs, sear on all sides, and set aside. In an oven-safe dish, sauté shallots and ginger, then stir in miso, soy sauce, brown sugar, and stock. Add garlic and ribs, bring to a boil, then braise in the oven at 170ºC for 3 to 3½ hours until fork-tender. Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions before serving.

George Clarke marks historic restoration

St Osyth Priory welcomed VIPs, heritage enthusiasts and members of the community to celebrate the official opening of its magnificently restored Gatehouse – a treasured symbol of the estate’s rich history and future as a luxury wedding venue.

The event was marked by a special guest appearance from renowned TV architect George Clarke, known for his Channel 4 shows The Restoration Man and Amazing Spaces. George cut the ribbon and praised the extraordinary work carried out to restore the Gatehouse, which dates back to 1481 and is widely regarded as one of Britain’s finest examples of flint flushwork.

The day’s celebrations included guided tours of the priory estate, allowing guests to appreciate the craftsmanship and architectural heritage that defines St Osyth Priory. Visitors were also given a glimpse inside the recently restored Darcy House – now a beautifully reimagined events space, combining historical grandeur with modern comfort.

A highlight of the event was a lively panel discussion and Q&A session featuring George Clarke, restoration experts and representatives from St Osyth Priory. Together, they discussed the challenges and triumphs of restoring such an important heritage site, as well as the vision for its sustainable future.

The Gatehouse restoration is part of a long-standing project led by the Sargeant family, who have owned the estate since 1999.

“It has been a labour of love,” said William Grinsted, Managing Director. “To now make the Gatehouse the centrepiece of a luxury wedding venue will mean this incredible building will host many more memories that will last a lifetime.”

Simon Vernon-Harcourt, Design & Planning Director at City & Country Group, echoed this sentiment, reflecting on the estate’s ongoing role in creating a unique community in a setting steeped in history.

St Osyth Priory now stands not only as a monument to the past but also as a beacon for future celebrations, bringing heritage and hospitality together in one extraordinary place.

A wedding is one of life’s most important events and a joyous celebration of love - but it is not without its stresses and strains. There are so many elements to consider from choosing the bride and groom’s outfits to selecting the wedding venue. How do you plan a wedding? Here are ten top tips to ensure your wedding is a day to remember for all the right reasons.

Set your budget

It’s all too easy to get carried away by all the beautiful dresses, suits, flowers, venues, menus and the like. But while you want to have a wonderful day, you don’t want to be paying for it for the next ten years. It’s important to work out how much you can save before the big day and what you can afford to pay. Make a list of everything you will need from dresses to flowers and add up the costs. It’s important to be honest and realistic from the outset or you will regret it later when costs get out of hand.

Choose your priorities

Whether it is the live band or elaborate table decorations, everyone has their priorities of what matters most in making their wedding day special. Draw up a list of your and your partner’s priorities so you can see clearly what matters most. Now the time has come for the bride and groom to plan their wedding day. It’s certainly not an easy task with so many decisions to be made on subjects ranging from dresses to cakes, guests to photographers and for some it can seem like a military exercise.

One of the biggest decisions to make is which wedding venue with so many diverse options available, from hotels to stately homes. It can become somewhat overwhelming but here’s some guidance on how to choose the venue which will be perfect for your special day.

Visit your venue

A brochure or website might show a lot about a wedding venue but there’s nothing quite like visiting it to get a feel of the atmosphere (and to see what hasn’t been shown). No website will show there’s a kebab shop or sewage works nearby and you don’t want any unpleasant surprises on your wedding day. You can also find out about the venue’s accessibility and assess practical issues such as parking and accommodation. There’s no getting away from it, weddings are expensive. There’s so much to pay for but by fixing a budget, you can ensure finances don’t get out of hand. After all, you don’t want to be paying for your wedding on your fifth anniversary.

One of the biggest outlays will be the day itself – the venue, the wedding breakfast and reception and all are so important in making your special day perfect.

Many venues offer a selection of wedding packages but find out exactly what is being offered and make sure there are no hidden costs. Find out what rooms are included in the cost such as how many bridal rooms or if there a lounge area for guests to relax. Check if there are any other events being held at the venue on the same day and details such as when you can get in to decorate the rooms.

Ceremonies, wedding breakfast and reception

Don’t be afraid to give your views on what you would like and ask questions including if food is prepared by staff at the venue or outside caterers. It should be a full conversation, not just being presented with a pre-prepared menu.

Also ask about the level of staffing, is there is a Master of Ceremonies and bar staff - in essence, what you will get for your money. You should check on the shape and size of the tables so you can draw up table plans and double check if you need to pay for crockery and cutlery or if that is included in the cost. You might be able to taste some of the food in advance but again check if there is a charge for this.

Most venues have an alcohol licence but it pays to make sure and also if you can supply your own alcohol and if cash is accepted at the bar.

Similarly, find out what accommodation is available for the bride and groom and their closest family and friends. Also ask about costs, facilities and timings of checking in and out.

Dates, dancing and photographs

Wedding venues notoriously get booked up years in advance so if you want a specific date, it’s advisable to book as soon as possible. Check if there are big events on that day as you won’t want your wedding to clash. Once you have picked your day, ask how much of a deposit you will need to secure your date.

If you are choosing a summer wedding, you might prefer to have your ceremony outside but check if there is an alternative if the heavens open. Also check what scope there is for photographs and if confetti and fireworks are allowed.

The formalities of the day will fade as the evening celebrations begin. Along with these come more considerations and more questions to ask. Can you have a DJ or a band and are there places where they can plug in their equipment? What sort of catering will be provided in the evening and at what cost? What time must the music stop and are there cleaning up costs to be considered?

Insurance and payment

Hopefully with careful planning and using wedding professionals, your day will go perfectly. However, it’s worth just checking if a venue has public liability insurance just in case… Most will but it is a question which should be asked.

Also check when the final payments need to be made and what is their cancellation policy should anything go wrong on either side.

A conference is a great way to bring together like minds and creates a situation where the whole is greater than its component parts.

It might be an up-and-coming business hoping to show off its ideas and build contacts or a group looking to showcase a major project. Whatever it's design, a conference needs to inspire and that is why the venue is so important.

On a purely practical level, certain boxes must be ticked.

Restored Coat of Arms unveiled at St Osyth

Royal master carver, Paul Wilson, was the guest of honour at St Osyth Priory as he pulled the cord on the velvet curtain to reveal his latest historic restoration.

The heraldic crest of the Earl of Rochford has been a focal point of The Gatehouse at the St Osyth Priory estate for almost 300 years and now its future has been assured for centuries more.

The coat of arms was first erected by Frederic Nassau de Zuylestein, 3rd Earl of Rochford, who took possession of the estate in 1721, making it his main seat in England and beginning an expansive programme of improvements which shaped much of the estate as it is seen today.

In recent years, time and climate had taken their toll on the coat of arms and a painstaking restoration was required to bring the landmark back to life. As a pivotal part of the multi-million-pound regeneration of the historic estate, Paul was the top man for the job. Well known for his work on many of the royal palaces around the UK, Paul dedicated more than 1,000 hours of his highly-skilled craftsmanship to the transformation.

Paul explains: “The coat of arms was in a terrible state. It hadn’t been touched for over 100 years. It was almost beyond repair, but we sat down and went through a programme of restoration. We managed to consolidate and replace the carving where necessary. It has now been re-gilded and painted, with the exact colours of the original recreated from tiny fragments of paint salvaged from the wood.”

The emblem itself features coronets, lions and a pair of buck horns and includes the Latin motto Spes Durat Avorum, which translates as ' May the hopes of our forefathers endure '. As the project to revitalise the many historic buildings within the St Osyth Priory Estate continues, the motto seems perfectly in tune with the sense of responsibility to pick up and continue the legacy of the estate that has lasted more than 1,000 years.

St Osyth Priory held its first Wedding Showcase event at the end of February, with more than 80 happy couples taking the chance to explore the estate and discuss their wedding day preparations.

As well as the team of expert wedding planners at St Osyth Priory, visitors could also find answers and inspiration from a varied selection of trusted suppliers including Luca’s Cakes, B Celebrant, Maldon Events, Party Squared, W Flowers, AAA Wedding Cars and Fox and Braces outfitters.

With a series of private tours arranged throughout the day, it was a great opportunity for engaged couples to see the plans for their wedding day start to come to life in a setting that has limitless possibilities as the backdrop to a wedding day celebration with a true sense of luxury and legend.

At the centre of the day’s activities was the recently renovated Darcy House, which now boasts two stunning function suites, Darcy House Great Hall and Darcy House The Gallery. We are so excited to be welcoming hundreds of visitors to our St Osyth Priory Estate Open Day on 27th November.

The Open Day is exclusive to those with a confirmed booking and will give VIP guests the chance to take in views of the estate and explore the very latest progress in the revitalisation of this iconic landmark within the village of St Osyth.

At the centre of the estate is the 16th century Darcy House. Taking its name from the 1st Lord Darcy, Lord Chamberlain of the household under Edward VI, Darcy House has been the focal point of painstaking renovation and now features two beautifully restored function suites, each with the capacity for 110 seated guests.

Weddings and other events will be staged within Darcy House from spring 2023, with further plans for the estate to be home to hotel accommodation, country holiday retreats, a farm shop, a pub, a café and a wellbeing centre.

During the Open Day, visitors will get the chance to tour the estate as well as step inside Darcy House to experience the beautifully restored interior, including hand-painted ceilings and stunning wood panelling. Refreshments will also be served too, giving guests the chance to sample the flavours that will become part of the new future for St Osyth Priory.

This is a very exciting time in the 1,400-year history of the St Osyth Priory Estate.

At the heart of the estate, the iconic Darcy House has been undergoing something of a revitalisation with the promise of an exciting new beginning. With some parts of the house originating from the 16th century, Darcy House takes its name from the 1st Lord Darcy who rose to become Lord Chamberlain of the household under Edward VI.

Over recent years, Darcy House has been undergoing a comprehensive restoration. Beautifully ornate ceilings, ancient stonework, elegant wood panelling and sparkling chandeliers have all been painstakingly and professionally reconditioned, creating two main function suites over two floors, each with the capacity for 110 seated guests.

While the sense of history remains, Darcy House has become a modern and luxurious wedding venue in the wondrous parkland setting of St Osyth Priory. The refurbishment so far includes Darcy House Great Hall on the ground floor, which will be used to host civil ceremonies followed by drinks and canapes. While upstairs, Darcy House The Gallery is where guests can enjoy a fine dining wedding breakfast and the chance to celebrate with the happy couple.

And this is just the start of the story, with the continuing multi-million-pound restoration of the historic site set to see further wedding facilities introduced to the estate including the expansive Tithe Barn and The Chapel, plus a Gazebo overlooking the 1920s Lily Pond for outside weddings.

Visited twice by Queen Elizabeth I during her Royal Progresses of the 16th century, St Osyth Priory Estate offers wedding guests the chance to follow in these royal footsteps, while the sprawling parkland features ancient lakes and breath-taking woodland, providing an incredible natural habitat for wildlife and birdlife.

These latest innovations on the St Osyth Priory Estate are part of the final stages of a substantial project of redevelopment which has seen the restoration and preservation of 16 buildings of historic importance on the estate and will see the introduction of a sumptuous boutique hotel, delightful country retreats and a state-of-the-art wellbeing centre.

History is at the heart of St Osyth Priory Estate, with 1,400 years of legend, myth and mystery woven into the fabric of the estate’s magnificent parkland and collection of ancient buildings.

As restoration and improvements continue across the estate, the preservation of its unique habitats and historic landmarks are of paramount importance – giving new life to this incredible destination within the community of St Osyth.

A poignant moment within this transformation will be the restoration to its former glory of the heraldic crest of the Earl of Rochford, which is set to return to its position on The Gatehouse of the St Osyth Priory Estate before the end of November.

Having overlooked the estate since the 18th century, the Earl of Rochford’s coat of arms was removed from The Gatehouse as an essential part of the schedule of refurbishment. Featuring coronets, lions and a pair of buck horns, the design of the emblem also includes the Latin motto Spes Durat Avorum, which translates as, may the hopes of our forefathers endure.

When Frederic Nassau de Zuylestein, 3rd Earl of Rochford, took possession of the estate in 1721 it became his main seat in England. Quickly, he began an expansive programme of improvements which shaped many aspects of the estate as it is seen today.

In recent years, a multi-million-pound schedule of works on the estate has helped to secure the future of one of the largest collections of ecclesiastical buildings in the country, while also giving the estate a viable economic future with the upcoming launch of a luxury wedding venue, holiday accommodation, a café and a farm shop.

Returning the reconditioned coat of arms to its prominent position on The Gatehouse will be special in so many ways for the team at St Osyth Priory. As well as a symbolic example of the way in which the history of the estate is being restored and given new life for the future, there is a real feeling that the whole approach in the estate’s transformation is in keeping with the Earl of Rochford’s family motto, ‘may the hopes of our forefathers endure’.

Restoring the numerous ancient and listed buildings on the estate has been the cornerstone of the project and the team has a very real sense of fulfilling the coat of arms inscription – enabling the hopes of the forefathers of the estate to endure. It is exciting to think that the refurbished crest will stand proud over the estate for many more centuries to come.”
